There are many commercial creams and solutions formulated to rejuvenate the skin and make scars less noticeable. But if you are a fan of natural remedies and would relish knowing some of the treatment options you can turn to then look no further as this article has got you covered with some of the popular remedies.

Natural Scar Treatment- Natural Remedies for Scars

What do laser treatment, chemical peels and surgical revision have in common beyond being some of the ways to reduce scarring? Well, they are all relatively expensive. Here are some cheaper cost natural remedies for scars that can be used as an alternative to these more expensive options:

Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is perhaps the most mentioned remedy for scarring. Proponents of aloe vera cite its moisturizing properties for its ability to enhance the elasticity of the scar tissue while reducing the rate of inflammation. According to the Mayo Clinic website, studies have indicated that aloe vera gel can actually reduce the size of scars and make them less prominent.

Vitamin E and cocoa butter: The existing scientific studies are not conclusive of the effectiveness of vitamin E and cocoa butter in reducing the appearance of scars. As with aloe vera, the proponents of vitamin E and cocoa butter hold the opinion that their moisturizing action is responsible for its positive benefits on scar tissue.

There is however no harm in trying some of the vitamin E and cocoa butter products for scar removal especially given that they are typically used topically and are natural. The only reason you shouldn’t use any such products is if you are allergic to either one of them.

It is important to mention here that you should also not use vitamin E on a wound that has not completely healed. A study conducted by the University of Miami showed that vitamin E actually impairs wound healing. It was also found to cause allergic reaction in one-third of the participants.

Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is without doubt one of the most popular home remedy ingredients but its effectiveness for reduction of scars is backed by insufficient scientific evidence.

Proponents of tea tree oil propose its use for prevention of acne scars. This is attributed to its antibacterial properties which prevent bacterial build-up, the common factor for acne flare ups. There are numerous gels and creams that features tea tree oil as one of the ingredients and you may want to use it to control acne scars.

Lemon juice: A section of skin care experts disagree on the effectiveness of lemon juice for reduction of scarring, but those who argue in favor of lemon juice think that the exfoliating action of the alpha hydroxyl acids(AHA) found in lemon juice helps to rejuvenate the skin and restore its elasticity.

Some also think that the natural bleaching action can help to reduce the hyperpigmentation often associated with scar tissue.

Should you decide to give lemon juice a trial, here is how to go about it:

  • Clean the scarring site thoroughly
  • Pour a teaspoon of diluted lemon juice (freshly squeezed) onto a cotton ball
  • Swab it on the scar and leave it on for 10 minutes or so
  • Finish by rinsing it off with warm water

Baking soda: Baking soda can also help to improve scars by exfoliating the skin. The layer-by-layer exfoliating action of scar tissue helps to gradually scrape away the scar tissue. Simply mix baking soda and water in the ratio of 2:1 e.g. 1 tbsp baking soda and 2 tbsp water, and stir them thoroughly to make a fine paste.

Next, apply it on the scarred site and massage it gently (not vigorously) for about a minute before rinsing it off with water.

Honey: Some experts think that honey’s ability to moisturize the skin and stimulate tissue regeneration can have positive benefits on scarring.

Here is a honey-baking soda recipe that you may want to try:

  1. To a small basin, add 2 tablespoons of raw honey and 2 tablespoons of baking soda and stir thoroughly till well blended.
  2. Now apply the paste on the scar and massage gently for 3 minutes.
  3. Next, dip a washcloth in hot water and squeeze off excess water before placing it on the scar tissue.
  4. Allow the washcloth time to dissipate heat and once cold, use it to wipe the honey-baking soda paste off.

Gotu kola

The use of Gotu kola is increasingly being advocated for reduction of keloid scars. Gotu kola can be injected, taken orally, or applied topically on the scarring site, but the existing scientific evidence is not enough to indicate that it is really beneficial to scarring.

Best Natural Scar Treatment

With so many treatment options proposed for reduction of scar tissue, you may be right now be wondering what the best natural scar treatment is.

Well, most of the natural remedies commonly used have varying scientific evidence to their effectiveness, but judging from the expert opinions available, aloe vera gel and tea tree oil seem like the safest bet and so is gotu kola.

Natural Scar Treatment for the Face

You can use the above remedies to get rid of facial scarring but lemon juice should never be used undiluted as this can have a drying effect on the skin. As for tea tree oil, you should apply a small amount on a test area first to see how it reacts with your facial skin as it often leads to allergic reactions for people with sensitive skin.

Acne Scars Natural Treatment

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne ranks among the most common cause of scars. Laser resurfacing, punch grafts, dermabrasion and filler injections can be used to get rid of acne-related scarring but for lovers of natural interventions, tea tree oil, baking soda, and lemon juice are some good choices.

Using a good face wash to get rid of excessive oil and applying a good SPF is also advised.

Natural Keloid Scar Treatment – Should I use Gotu Kola?

Gotu kola taken orally, Injected, or applied directly on the scar tissue is increasingly being touted to help to get rid of or minimize keloid scars. The existing scientific evidence is however insufficient to support the claims. It is nevertheless worth the benefit of doubt and would suggest giving it a shot.

Natural Scar Treatment Products

Skarslick stands out among the commercial scar removal products that claim to be natural. Despite all the chemical ingredients such as propylparaben, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cyclopentasiloxane and Dimethicone Copolyol, contains numerous natural ingredients such as elastin, allantoin and jojoba oil.

And if online reviews are anything to go by, they suggest positive benefits to scarred skin.
