Getting a nose piercing bump is a common concern. Bumps could occur inside the nose, on the piercing or next the piercing. This article will discuss what nose piercing bumps are and what causes them. You will also discover useful tips on how to get rid of such bumps.

It is very common for small bumps to form on nose piercings. This could be the result of infection. Remember the cartilaginous nature of nasal tissues means that it doesn’t heal as easily as flesh and it is more susceptible to infections.

The bumps on nose piercings commonly form after a few days or months. In some cases, such bumps form because of trauma to the piercing e.g. when it has been tugged or knocked, and if the stud or ring has been removed and re-inserted resulting in damage to the tissues around the wound. They are characteristically raised and red in color as you can see in the picture below:

When bumps occur on your piercing on the nose, it is important to take appropriate measures to ensure that they don’t develop into scar tissues.

In some cases, the cause of the infection leading to the bumps is the choice of the jewelry (nose stud, ring, or screw). You should ensure that you wear only quality titanium, surgical stainless steel, and niobium jewelry. Don’t go for the cheap, free jewelry that some piercing shops might offer as this can easily cause infection.

That said you should avoid changing the jewelry until the piercing has fully healed as this can cause irritation and even infection to the nose piercing, which could be manifested in bumps. Should you however feel that the choice of jewelry could be the cause of bumps on the piercing consider seeing the piercing professional who pierced the nose rather than changing it on your own.

The piercing professional will help you choose the right size and insert it in for free.

Nose piercing bumps could as well be due to granuloma. Granulomas result from overgrown body tissues and are usually not harmful and don’t signify infections. Granulomas are however fragile and could easily bleed if disturbed e.g. when cleaning the piercing. They can also drain a clear fluid. They respond well to hot compresses (see below).

On general scale, bumps on a newly pierced nose clear away on their own after a short while and with small interventions such as hot compresses (more on this later) but should they appear to be persistent and refuse to clear away after a few weeks, you should consider seeking medical attention as ignoring the bump could result into large scars on the piercing.

Your doctor will prescribe some antibiotics and other medications to get rid of any infections.

Nose Piercing Bump Inside

Some people experience nose piercing bumps inside their nose. This may be a sign of infection. Using simple home remedies such as sea salt hot compresses and tea tree oil, among others (see below) can help to get rid of such a bump.

A bump inside the nose may also be an indication that the jewelry used is not of the right size. You should however not change the jewelry on your own if the piercing on the nose has not fully healed. Instead seek the help of a professional piercer.

A bump inside the nose can also occur as a result of irritation resulting from a change of nose jewelry even after the piercing has healed completely. Such a bump will often easily clear with tea tree oil dap or any other remedy.

Bump Next To Nose Piercing

So you have finally made the decision to get your nose pierced but a few days or weeks down the line, the unthinkable has happened; a red, ugly, bump has formed next to the nose piercing. What should you do to get rid of the bump?

This maybe or may not be a result of infection. The first step should be to try a hot sea salt solution compress. If that doesn’t help, you may consider using other remedies such as teat tree oil, chamomile tea etc or using an over-the-counter antibiotic cream or gel.

If the bump remains next to your pierced nose after three weeks of these remedies or keeps growing, consider seeing a doctor.  (See the “How to get rid of nose piercing bump” section below for more information on treating a bump next to a piercing on the nose.

If the bump seems like a scar and doesn’t produce and fluid, it could be a keloid; consider seeking medical attention.

Infected Nose Piercing Bump

Not all  bumps on a pierced nose signify an infection. So how do you tell if what you are experiencing is an infected nose piercing bump?  Well, infected ones tend to look like a small pimple and could have some pus.

Pus is the most certain way of telling that you are dealing with an infection and if a pus-filled bump is left untreated, the infection could progress into an abscess or pustule. This is a hard lump that often forms under the skin as a reaction by the body in an attempt to isolate a chronic infection.

Although nose piercing infections are unlikely to occur if proper aftercare measures are adopted, a tender, pink lump that looks like a pimple is a sign of infection. You should consider seeing your doctor for medical treatment of infected bumps on a pierced nose.

How to Get Rid of Nose Piercing Bump

Here is how to get rid of bumps on a pierced nose with simple home remedies:

Hot compresses: this is one of the easiest ways to get rid of a nose piercing bump at home. A quick way to do this is to soak a clean cotton ball in a hot sea salt solution and pressing it on the bump until the heat dissipates. Repeat the procedure for ten minutes three times a day until the bumps clears away (usually in 4-5 days).

Make sure that the sea salt solution is hot enough for the heat to penetrate the bump but not so hot as to burn the skin. It is advisable to rinse the nose with some warm water after this procedure to prevent salt from drying inside the nostril. This home remedy can get rid of piercing bumps very fast by clearing the underlying infection.

Chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is yet another simple but very effective way to get rid of bumps at home that result when you pierce your nose.

Directions: to a pot of warm water, add one or two chamomile tea bags. Compress the tea bag on the bump until it dissipates all the heat. Re-dip it in the pot and repeat the procedure for about ten minutes three times a day.

Tea tree oil

Applying tea tree oil to the affected area is also a great way to heal a nose piercing bump.

Directions: add a drop of tea tree oil to any skin-friendly oil such as jojoba oil or olive oil before applying it to the bump on the piercing with a cotton ball. Repeat this procedure 2 times only since an overuse of tea tree oil can cause drying of the skin.

Aspirin

Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, applying aspirin to a piercing is also very effective in getting rid of a bump developing.

Directions: Dissolve an aspirin tablet in a small glass with a little water and shake it thoroughly till it dissolves. Apply the resulting suspension on the piercing every day before bedtime.

Topical antibiotic creams and gels

Applying over-the-counter topical antibiotic gels and creams can also help to get rid of  piercing bumps. They are easily available in most drugstores.

Getting rid of Nose Piercing Bumps,  When to See a Doctor

Nose piercing bumps will in most cases respond well to the above remedies and treatment options, but you should consider seeking the attention of your doctor if:

  • You notice scar tissue formations e.g. keloids. These typically require surgical intervention.
  • The bump seems persistent and doesn’t clear away after three weeks of home remedies and treatment or even gets worse.
  • The  piercing bump produces a thick smelly discharge and is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever and dark streaks around the piercing.

  1. I had a persistent bump I could not cure using all of the helpful remedies in this article and elsewhere. I consulted the shop where my piercing was done and they suggested I swab the inside and outside area surrounding my piercing and bump with the original brown listerine. I also used a hot compress once a day to help draw the infection to the surface. Two weeks into this treatment I incorporated a topical application of anti-bacterial gel to the external surface of the bump after each cleaning to help disinfect and dry out the bump. I cleaned the bump whenever I accidentally touched it and cleansed it approximately 4 times a day.

I am happy to say the bump is flat and pretty much gone now! I don’t recommend using my technique without consulting with your piercer. FYI, my piercing was two months old when I employed this technique.

  2. I had a bump on my nose piercing. I had it for about a month, I tried everything – it would not go down! After trying sea salt soaks, chamomile tea, plenty other things I decided to take the jewellery out. About four times a day I would smear savlon over the bump- I did this for a week and now there is no bump. Just be patient with your piercing

  3. I had the dreaded bump appear after a few weeks(I was blowing my nose a lot so I think.this aggravated the piercing) I tried crushed aspirin in sea salt water mix for 2nights.it reduced inflammation but an ugly white head appeared.I read not to ever pop this so I got desperate and bought pure tea tree oil at local beauty supply.I dipped a q tip in the oil and then put a little water on the q tip to dilute.after one night the bump is almost gone and the white head is gone too

  4. I have had a bump for 3 week now (I’ve only had the piercing for 6 weeks). I have tried every one of these things and it keeps getting bigger. I have since found out that the piercer put in Sterling Silver for the jewelry. I have to wear gold, so I’m sure that’s why it’s infected. Going today to a different piercer and having it changed out. Here’s hoping…

  5. In such a hot weather in India I did priecing in summer it was healed very nicely within 7 days…but God knows what happened bumps has come out in my nose after a month…not painful bt very disturbing..using the hot compresed and few gel on it..more worried because one of my friend’s bumps still present even after a year… please pray for me and suggest something..

    • Nose piercings, like any other cartilage piercings, take a long time to heal. Ensure you clean your nose with saline or sea salt and water mixture, go for gold, steel, diamond jewelry (avoid those that contain nickel) and avoid touch it with dirty hands. Do not over clean your piercing, at most three to four times a day.

    • Babe it takes arnd 6-8 weeks to go I got my nose pierced in march mera bump happend in a week went sometime in the middle of may u shld do salt soaks 3ice a day initially usse reduce honjayega apart from that apply t-bact aur eat selicia 200 isse 2 weeks me flat ho jayega bump uske baad apply toothpaste raat ko bas ek din next day ull see kafi kam ho jayega fir icing karna din 3 baar aur calendula ointment lagana raat me 4 weeks me it will be gone u have be patient put neem ki sikh when the bump is almost negligible

  6. I’ve had my nose piercing for 2 weeks at first it started to sink in but now a lump has formed on the inside, I used chamomile tea bags to bring the initial swelling down, worked a treat straight away i couldn’t believe it! & now wash & soak it twice a day in warm/hot salty water & its not looking any better.. i will have to try tea tree tomorrow thou! probably doesn’t help that I’ve had 2 colds since getting it done 🙁 I wouldn’t suggest getting your nose pierced at the start of winter!!

  7. Honestly its all crappe that the bump goes in a week it takes 1.5 months to go I got it within a week of getting my nose pierced I was wearing a surgical wire then read up various blogs did salt water soaks 3ice a day also put t-bact had antibiotics the bump became flat in 2 weeks got the wire removed and a got a silver ring put and bam the bump was back the next day again did salt water soaks also put tea tree oil which was of no help at all instead led to my skin turning black after that I put bee wax which reduced the blackness continued with the salt water the bump reducrd marginally then I applied toothpaste the next day the bump had gone down a lot but again the skin turned black after which I started icing the area performing salt soaks occasionally and in 3 weeks the bump was merely a negligible scab got the ring removed and put a piece of neem stem the next day thhere were no traces of the bump.

  14. I’ve had my nose pierced since like July. But my aunt did it with a piercing gun. It gets infected then go away & repeat. The salt & water only worked away the infection but the bump inside my nose around my ring is so big. It doesn’t hurt I just want it gone cause it’s annoying. Sometimes it bleed & rarely puss come out. Idk what else to do & I really don’t want to remove it.

  15. I got my nose pierced this May and up till about two weeks ago I was still dealing with the puss, pain and that annoying bump ugh! I followed the directions exactly as instructed: saline solution soak 2x/day for 5mins. I did this for the first 6 weeks, no improvement. I switched to rubbing alcohol and saw just a little bit of improvement. Luckily I took a trip to the Caribbean, 2 visits to the beach later the bump is completely gone, no pain, no puss. I haven’t used anything on it whatsoever for 2 weeks and its still looking real good. Woohooo! If you’re close to a beach that’s relatively clean, I say hit the water!

  16. ive had my nose pierced for a little over a month now.. I noticed a couple weeks ago that a little bump had come up right next to my piercing on the outside, I just thought it was a pimple.. but no. at first, when i messed with it trying to figure out what it was, a little puss came out but it mainly bled. instantly I knew it wasn’t a pimple. I asked around to people I knew and they said sea salt treatment and I also looked it up on like and it basically said the same thing.. I’ve tried the sea salt treatment a couple times, I haven’t been consistent with it.. but all its done is go from bleeding when it would tear, to now it’s just a bump and it’s gotten bigger since yesterday. I seen the person that pierced it yesterday and she said it’s a keloid and to get vitamin e and bust it and rub it on there and it should help.. I’m just to the point where I’m gonna go to the doctor for it. I’ve researched info on this kinda thing, and I’ve read different things.. idk what to do! I guess I’ll try the vitamin e and I’m gonna call around to other piercing places and see what they say. cause this bump is driving me nuts!!!!! HELP!!!!!!

    • same!!! i had the red one that bleeds easily with a lil bit of pus, they told me to use chamomile tea bag to compress, now it stopped bleeding inside and outside but the bump is still there, its like a pimple without a cut where it bleeds, im not sure if it is keloid 🙁
